- AUSTIN, Minn — Lauretta Ann (Speltz) Bean, 88, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at St. Mark's
Lutheran Home in Austin.
She was born May 28, 1913 in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Arthur J. and Laura (Walch) Speltz. She was a graduate of St. Theodore High School and received her bachelor's degree in education from Winona State University. Laurette did her graduate study at the University of Colorado and the University of New Mexico. She taught school beginning in Myrtle, Minn., and Geneva, Minn., and Austin. She taught for 42 years, the last 14 years in Springfield, Minn.
Lauretta was united in marriage to James C. Bean June 15, 1957, at St. Theodore Church in Albert Lea. She was active in St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springfield for many years and most recently St. Augustine Church in Austin.
Laurette was a life member of the MEA and the NEA, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, the Springfield Hospital Board and the American Legion Auxillary.
She was very proud of being named the 1972 teacher of the year in Brown County. She was also a delegate to the MEA National Convention three times. Lauretta won the Women of Achievement Award in 1982 with Delta Kappa Gamma.
Lauretta had a great love for teaching, and children meant everything to her. She was very dedicated to her students.
Lauretta is survived by her sister, Dorothy Keele of Austin; brothers-in-law, Don Reiland of Mankato, Minn., and Robert and his wife, Jeanne Bean, of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Jo Ann and husband Richard Tews of Lewiston, Minn. and Ruth Bean of Tarpin Springs, Fla.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; sister, Marcella Reiland; brothers, Stan Speltz and Arthur Speltz, Jr.; and brothers-in-law, Bill Keefe abd William Bean.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at the St. T Lea, Minn.Theodore Catholic Church of Albert Lea, Minn. The Rev. Robert Schneider will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Theodores Cemetery, Albert Lea.
Memorials in lieu of flowers to the Jim and Lauretta Bean Scholarship Fund.
